What is Mucormycosis?

Mucormycosis, also commonly known as zygomycosis, is caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes. It is a very serious fungal infection which is rare but happens when people come in contact with the fungal spores in the environment commonly found in general environment, especially in decaying organic matter and soil. They also occur in leaves, compost piles or rotten wood. If someone inhales spores, he or she can contract Mucormycosis in the form of lung infection or sinus forms of the infection. Mucormycosis can also happen on the skin when fungus enters the skin through a cut, scrape, burn or other type of skin trauma. Thus affecting specifically those who already have some health problems or are taking medicines which induce effects to lower the immunity or body’s ability to resist sickness or fight germs.
